Well, we finally made it! This is the reveal of our One Room Challenge Theater Room. We started this room from scratch, an unfinished room in our basement. But now it’s a super cozy, dark and moody theater room that we can enjoy for all our family movie nights. And let me tell you, we LOVE movies! So, let’s get to it!
The Before
One great thing about starting with an unfished room is that it’s unfinished. It’s basically a blank slate. We did have one wall that was framed in when we built our house. I knew when we built our house that this room was going to be a theater room. So, let’s take a look at some before pictures.
The Plan
I wanted a dark and moody room that felt cozy with some unexpected accents. I wanted super comfy theater seating, but also a built-in daybed. I also wanted a place for all the bits and wires, but also a place for snacks.
Task List
There were several tasks that had to be completed for this room. We had to frame in the whole room, build a platform and a daybed. We had to lay flooring, install drywall, all the electrical work. We had to install all the trim and prime and paint everything. We also installed cabinets, built shelves, and built a rolling snack cart. And when I say “we”, I mean mostly Andy. 😉
The Reveal
We partnered with Dunn Edwards Paint for their new Dura Collection. We chose the color BlackJack for the whole room. But for the trim, cabinets, molding, and door we went with a satin finish and then matte for the walls and ceiling. It feels like a cozy cocoon, I just love the color! And the best part was, we only needed one of coat of paint after we used a tinted primer!
Seating
We did not get special theater seats for our room. For one, they’re very expensive. And the turnaround time for anything was so great that we wouldn’t have even received furniture in time, if we would have ordered it. So what did we do? We used our sofa and loveseat set from our upstairs living room. It’s leather and it’s super cozy and it totally fits the space. Maybe someday we can get the amazing theater seats, but for now, we’re happy with what we have.
Daybed
This was something that I really wanted in our theater room. I wanted alternative seating for watching movies. And this space allows us to have more people in the room. It also doubles as a place for our son to sleep. He’s slept in this room every weekend since he’s been able to. It must be pretty cozy!
Lighting
We partnered with Blueprint Lighting again for our Theater Room. We chose two different lighting options for our room. For the sconces, we went with the Jenny Glass Wall Sconce. We chose perfect white and black for the colors and brushed brass for the metal. They look amazing! For the pendants, we chose the Montera Pendant in brushed brass. The amazing thing about these lights is that they’re completely customizable. You can choose any color that you want. And they’re all handmade.
We also added can lighting. We have 5 in this space.
Hardware
We didn’t need a lot of hardware, but we did install cabinets under the TV for storage and all the media components. We partnered with Schaub for the cabinet pulls. We chose the Northport 8″ pulls in satin brass. I love how they pop against the dark cabinet color.
Rugs
We partnered with Loloi for our two rugs. I wanted identical rugs, to keep things simple. I chose the Humphrey from the collaboration between Loloi and Chris Loves Julia. I went with the Natural Moss color and the size is 5×7. Can I just tell you; these rugs are so soft! The pile is different from my other rugs, and I just love it. I love the colors in the rugs. Even though, they have several colors, it still works as a neutral. The rugs really cozy up the room and help keep your feet warm in this basement room.
Snack Cart and Art
Initially, we were going to purchase a cart for the space. But that proved impossible due to the dimensions that we needed and then, of course, cost. So, Andy built a cart mainly out of 2×4’s. The middle rack has thinner slats. The top is a granite piece that we already had that Andy got for free! He added casters for easy mobility. And we stained it Dark Walnut.
We partnered with Tailored Canvases for a custom art piece. I absolutely love how it turned out. It’s such a statement piece for our room. You can use my code TRUEMANS15 for 15% off your purchase! I do hope to add some movie posters in the future.
Conclusion
I’m so glad we’re done with the Fall One Room Challenge! It’s been a wild ride to get to this point. I don’t I’ll do the Fall ORC again, paired with Christmas, it’s just too much. But I’m so happy with what we created and I’m really proud of how it turned out. Of course, I had to decorate it for Christmas. 😉 It wouldn’t be my house if there wasn’t a tree in every room. Be sure to check out all the amazing transformations on the One Room Challenge Blog.
