I made a lot of mistakes when designing our house in 2017. And there are a lot of things I would have done differently. One of the main things is a better use of storage. We don’t have a linen closet…anywhere in our house. Our sheets are stored in our dressers. The towels were stored in the vanities and a standalone cabinet I bought off of FB marketplace. When we were building our home, I knew I wanted a floor to ceiling built-in for our master bathroom. But because of the budget, we opted to do that at a later date. And that date is now! So, let’s get to it.
The Before
Yes, this cabinet has served its purpose over the years. But it was never ideal. I’m pretty sure it was part of a media cabinet (because I have a matching one that the seller made me take). It was an orangey yellow wood color, and I used chalk paint in white. Then I used a window cling to mask all the mess inside. 😆 I also switched out the hardware that I found at Hobby Lobby. This cabinet is very deep, and I always ended up putting a bunch of junk on top. I knew there was a better (and prettier) way.

The Solution
I’m sure you’ve seen IKEA hacks on Pinterest, IG, FB…all the places. And I knew that was the route I wanted to go for affordability. We also had our leftover wall cabinets from our Laundry Room Refresh a couple of years ago. (See, it pays to be a hoarder…sometimes.) So, my idea was to use an IKEA dresser and then stack our wall cabinets on top of each other to give us maximum storage and a built-in furniture look.
Andy built a base frame for the dresser to sit on. He attached everything to the wall, as well. We stacked our cabinets on top of each other and Andy screwed them together and attached them to the wall. He added wood plywood paneling to the sides to hide the seam. He also added crown molding and our base trim to give it more of a built-in furniture look.

Painting
Now this can be tricky with IKEA or any laminate furniture. I did a ton of research online and I found that everyone was saying the same thing. YOU MUST PRIME! And you have to use a shellac-based primer. We used this one from Lowe’s because I found that it was used and recommended the most. You can use a paint sprayer too (which we did on the drawer fronts and doors), but you’re supposed to clean it with some kind of denatured alcohol solution (we didn’t do that). We did clean it very well and it still works amazing. I brushed and rolled on the primer to the rest of the pieces. I primed both the dresser and the upper cabinets just to make sure. We did give all the pieces a very rough light sanding, just to make sure. This primer is very hard, and it dries quickly. We did 2 coats and waited at least a day before painting.

If you saw my previous post, we went with Tonester’s Palace Ink for our paint color. It’s fabulous. We also used the paint sprayer for the drawer fronts and doors and then I rolled and brushed on the rest. We partnered with Sashco for all our caulking needs for this project. They have this fabulous product called, Exact Color Sealant, where you can mix your paint into the caulk for a seamless look. We used this product for the built-in cabinet, and it worked like a dream.
Here’s how to do it:
- Draw up 20cc of your paint color
- Inject the paint into the caulk after you have removed the cap
- Place cap back on and shake
- Remove the cap and add the thickener
- Place cap back on and shake again
- Wait for 30 minutes
- Snip the tip and you’re ready to go!

Hardware
We previously had brushed nickel hardware, faucets, and light fixtures. But for this refresh, I wanted to mix things up a bit. I went with satin brass hardware for all the cabinets, and I used knobs and pulls from Emtek. We used their hardware in our Pantry Project and in our Theater Room Project. They have amazing quality products. And I love how the brass looks against that moody purple/pink color!

Conclusion
I hope you’ll follow along for the reveal this weekend. I’m really worried we’re not going to get it done. But I think I’ve said that before. 😆 Andy assures me we will get it done. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏻Be sure to follow along on Instagram for all the behind the scenes and updates. Until next time Treasure Hunters!
