The kitchen was one of the rooms I was most excited to design for our new house. There were specific things that were absolute must haves for me. Because this is (hopefully) our last home, I wanted to have my dream kitchen that was attainable in our budget. So, let’s dive right in!
Cabinets
We chose a classic black and white kitchen. I had always wanted a two-toned kitchen and I’m really happy with how everything turned out. We chose a shaker cabinet with a little extra detail. Custom cabinets were not in our budget, but I would consider our cabinets semi-custom. The white cabinets have a dark grey glazing detail, and the black cabinets are distressed. The colors are literally black and white from the cabinet company. I do love our cabinets, but we had so many issues with the company that supplied the cabinets…I would not use them again. I think that the quality from the cabinet company is very good though.
Sink
The sink was an absolute must have for me…a white farmhouse sink. You can choose either a single or a double basin sink, and we chose the single. I would definitely choose the single every time. It’s such a huge sink and makes doing dishes a little easier (for my son to do 😆). And it’s so pretty! Our sink lives in our island, I would’ve loved to have a sink by a window…but that didn’t work out. I do recommend the sink wire rack to help protect the bottom from scratches.
Faucet
The faucet I had a hard time deciding on what I wanted. We ended up with a beautiful single handle faucet in a brushed nickel finish. I would choose something different if I was designing the kitchen again, something more classic. I really love the bridge style faucets, but if I was going to do a single handle again, I would choose this faucet (if I had a HUGE budget).
Appliances
Appliance shopping can be kind of hard, right? There are so many options, and you want to stay within your budget too. I wasn’t really tied to any particular brand. We’ve had a high-end kitchen when we live in Alabama, and I would have definitely picked those appliances…. but the budget. We went with a stainless-steel package. We choose a French door fridge, which I really love. It’s also a countertop depth, so it doesn’t stick out too much. We have all electric, so the stove is a glass-top electric slide in stove with oven. Then we have a microwave oven and another wall oven. I originally thought I wanted just the cooktop, but quickly decided that I wanted two ovens. Double ovens are so convenient, especially when entertaining. Rounding out the appliances is the dishwasher in the island. I think I would choose a panel ready one so it would look like a cabinet instead.
Layout
We have an open floor plan which is great for entertaining. The island and peninsula offer great countertop space for serving. A large pantry was another must have for me. I really want to give the pantry a makeover, hopefully, we can get that done this year. We chose lantern style pendants for a classic look. I have plans to give the lights a mini makeover for an updated look. I highly recommend doing drawers in the kitchen. I’m so happy that we did. Drawers are so much easier to use for pots and pans and all the bowls. I wish I would have added only drawers for the whole kitchen.
That’s about it! I hope you’ve been inspired to design your own dream kitchen. Until next time Treasure Hunters!
